ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

I’m not against marketing towards young girls (that’s the holy grail in the gaming industry these days). What I AM against is using the stereotype that girls only enjoy giggling, ponies, “lilac” things, and speak in txtspeak all the time. I am also against bundling a handheld (which may catch the interest of even older females) with a game that I highly doubt would convince anyone over the age of 14 to scream ‘OMG MOM I NEED THIS, LIKE NOW!” What about us girls that are beyond the age range and just want a cool-colored handheld. I didn’t need to pay for a Hannah Montana bundle to get my awesome blue Nintendo DSi! Sony, you need to broaden your range with the female demographic!

And don’t even get me started on that ‘OMG PSP’ nonsense. I’d like to think that Sony hopes that the young girls they are targeting do not see right through this stereotype-boundary-crossing marketing campaign. Then again, they better hope that the parents that are paying for it don’t see right through it either.

While this news will most likely surprise no one, Squaresoft’s Playstation One best-seller Final Fantasy VII, has sold over 100,000 downloads since it’s release earlier this month, becoming what fellow gaming news site, Joystiq, is calling the fastest selling PSN game yet. Seeing as FF7 is widely regarded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time, again, this is not a shocker.

Joystiq brings up another discussion: “If a simple digital re-release can garner these kinds of sales figures, imagine what a proper remake could do.”

Ugh… I shudder at the though…

I love Final Fantasy VII, and now that there’s a PSN port that’s much easier to find than the original PS1 disc, I can’t think of any reason in the world to remake it. I can see it now: Crappy voice actors, cornball music, an “improved” battle system. No thank you, I’ll pass. While the plethora of FF7 spin-offs and sequels are a nice addition, they don’t even come close to the magic of the original game. Leave it alone, please.

What do you think? Final Fantasy VII remake: Yay or nay?
